A common question for the inked is “what are the most painful places to get a tattoo?” Often you’ll hear: the hands, ribcage, and spinal area. Yet every individual experiences pain differently – so labelling the most painful spot to be tattooed is not an exact science.
For some, pain is most intensely experienced when the tattoo machine passes over bones (hence the commonly reported ribcage). This pain is experienced as a lack of cushioning from muscle or fat reduces the body’s ability to resist the pain as the machine repeatedly hits thin layers of skin and bones. For this same reason, fleshy parts of your body such as shoulders, arms, and lower legs have been known to be less painful areas for your next tattoo design.
The head tattoo is known to be uncomfortable due to it’s sensation on the skull; both the noise and the feeling have been known to reverberate through the entire head while being tattooed.
Speaking to the points above, the sternum is one of the thinnest layers of skin on your body. Get ready for some fun when your tattoo machine passes this area.
A commonly known trouble area.
The bum is a strange area. With all that flesh one would think it’s a relatively pain-free tattoo zone. Think again.
Inner Thigh & Knee
This area is generally extremely sensitive. Have you ever let anyone touch you there, let along place a tattoo machine?
Your foot is another area of your body with a thin layer of skin and abundance of nerve endings. For this reason it will be more uncomfortable than most places you will get tattooed, however the pain can be over exaggerated.
For the same reasons as your head (uncomfortable vibrating sensations) the face tattoo can be very uncomfortable. Our best advice, is sit back and relax.
Ouch, ouch, ouch. Especially if you’re considering a tattoo on your palm. Hand tattoos are awesome however; no pain, no gain.
Rib Cage and Stomach
Similar to your sternum a thin layer of skin does not help to pad the impact of the tattoo machine.
Finishing off the list is the ankle tattoo. It’s the most “manageable” of the 10 most painful places to get a tattoo.
