These days, you can get all types of tattoos, as readers of FORM.ink and members of our social tattoo community know all too well. We have looked at Tribal tattoos, small tattoos for men and women, optical illusion tattoos, and even Pokemon tattoos in recent times, but now, it’s time to look at gaming theme tattoos, and we think there are some brilliant designs to choose from. Without further ado then, here is just a few that have caught our eye…
Think of a classic gaming character and odds are you will come up with either Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog, depending on if you are or were a Nintendo or Sega fan — and no doubt depending on your age, too!
Mario has been around now since the 1980s — first appearing in Donkey Kong in 1981 — and while he has evolved and changed from “Jumpman”, as he was first known, today, he is a major global cultural icon. It is easy to see, then, why the Italian plumber has inspired so many tattooists.
It is a similar story with Sonic the Hedgehog, and while the likable blue hedgehog did not appear until the early 1990s — some 10 years after Mario — he is just as iconic, if not more so. Indeed, Sonic was named the most popular game character of all time not that long ago and continues to appeal today, most recently appearing in Sonic Mania (released this month for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows) and hailed as a return-to-form by both game critics and fans alike.
Of course, not all gaming tattoos have to be cute and cartoon-like, and there are some brilliant designs based on retro game controllers — big tick! — as well as other franchises such as Lara Croft, although admittedly, the latter now bridges both gaming and movies.
There are also some very smart retro gaming-based tattoos featuring Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Street Fighter, and even Tetris, which is possibly one of the best puzzle games ever, if not certainly one of the more well known.
It is not just video games that figure either, with some notable designs based on classic board games, too — think Monopoly, Chess, and even Hungry Hungry Hippos.
Lest we forget, there are also some cool playing card designs as well, from those that are small and discreet to the more in-your-face — definitely, ones to suit all tastes, whether you indulge in cards for just fun or for more serious games. Whatever card or casino-based tattoo you go for though, don’t forget the significance of certain numbers, as some are regarded as more fortunate than others; although this does vary among different countries and cultures.
Lastly, we couldn’t talk about gaming tattoos without mentioning those featuring dice and/or slot/fruit machines — including those based on the old one-arm bandit machines; although again, be mindful of the numbers.
